If you have a tooth that has been extensively broken down, either through deep decay or dental breakage, the resulting cavity may be too large to be reliably restored with a simple tooth-coloured filling.

In this type of situation, you may be advised to consider a stronger type of restoration which will not only replace the lost tooth tissue but will also rebuild and reinforce your tooth to help prevent it from further breakage and potential premature loss. These restorations are called inlays and onlays. They are bespoke, custom-made restorations that are often made from reinforced tooth-coloured porcelain, and they can be very aesthetically pleasing as they provide you with a full-sized replica of your original tooth.

Traditionally, these restorations were made out of gold, and this is still a strong and durable option if you are happy for your restoration not to be tooth-coloured.
